Self-Exclusion: What It Blocks, and What It Deliberately Cannot Undo

Self-exclusion is one registration that blocks account opening and account use at every gambling operator licensed to serve Great Britain. It is free, it takes a few minutes, and it is the only tool here that does not depend on an individual casino choosing to honour it — participation is a condition of holding a licence.

What registering does

You choose a minimum period — six months, one year or five years — and provide the details operators match against: name, date of birth, address, email, mobile number. From that point every licensee must refuse a new account and must close access to an existing one for the duration.

Balances are returned. The block prevents use; it does not confiscate.

The match works on identity, so it is only as strong as the details given. Registering under one email and later using another does not defeat it — name, date of birth and address are the primary keys — but incomplete details do weaken it, and adding every address and email you have used makes it stronger.

The three things it cannot do

It cannot be shortened. Six months is the floor and there is no early cancellation. This is the design rather than a limitation: an exclusion that could be lifted in a difficult moment would not be an exclusion.

It does not end by itself. At the end of the chosen period the block remains until it is actively ended, and there is a further cooling-off period before that takes effect. Doing nothing means remaining excluded, which is the correct default.

It does not reach outside the licensing framework. Operators not licensed for Great Britain have no obligation to honour it.

That third point deserves to be said plainly rather than left as an implication. Sites outside the framework also have no approved dispute route, no deposit-limit obligations, and no requirement that terms be fair. An exclusion is not a wall with a door in it; it is a wall around the part of the market that has rules. Nothing outside the Gambling Commission register appears anywhere on this site, at any traffic value.

Choosing a period

Six months is the shortest available and it is long enough to interrupt a pattern rather than a mood. Five years is not a more serious version of the same decision — it is a different decision, and people who choose it generally know why.

The honest guidance is that the period should be chosen for what it makes impossible rather than for what it signals. If six months feels uncomfortably long, that is information about the six months rather than about the choice.

Before, instead of, or alongside

A time-out at one operator is a day to six weeks and reverses automatically: the instrument for a bad evening. A deposit limit is designed to be used while continuing to play, and it is the tool most people should have. Account closure is unbounded and per-operator.

Self-exclusion is the one for a pattern rather than an incident, and choosing it is not an escalation of the others so much as an admission that per-operator tools do not cover a market with hundreds of operators in it.
