Wagering Requirements Explained, and Why Steeper Is Not Proportional

A wagering requirement is a multiplier applied to winnings: at twenty times, a £12 win must be staked £240 before it can be withdrawn. The arithmetic is trivial. What is not obvious is that doubling the multiple far more than doubles the difficulty, and that is the whole of why this term decides offers.

The decay is the mechanism

The turnover has to be generated from the balance itself, and the balance shrinks as it is staked. A slot with a 96% return gives back, on average, 96p of every pound staked and keeps 4p. Stake £12 and you have, on average, £11.52 left and £12 of turnover recorded. Stake that and you have about £11.06 and £23.58 recorded. Continue and the balance decays geometrically while the turnover accumulates linearly.

At ten times, the £12 needs to survive roughly ten of those round trips: comfortably possible, and it happens often. At twenty times, twenty round trips: the average balance is down to around £7 by then and any run of bad luck ends it. At forty, forty round trips, and the average path does not reach the end. This is why forty times is not four times harder than ten times — it is a different category of condition.

Averages are the optimistic case

Everything above uses the average return, which is the best-case description of the process. Real slot play is high variance: the balance does not decline smoothly, it jumps and drops, and it hits zero far more often than the average path suggests. Variance makes a requirement harder, never easier, because the failure state is absorbing — a balance at zero does not recover, however good the next spin would have been.

What the weighting does to all of this

Everything above assumed the turnover can be generated on any game. It usually cannot. Where table games are weighted at zero, low-variance play contributes nothing, and low-variance play is the only way to make a large requirement survivable. A blackjack player staking £1 a hand loses about half a penny per hand on average and would clear £480 of turnover with most of the balance intact — which is precisely why the weighting exists.

Slots-only weighting therefore does not just narrow the choice of game. It removes the strategy that would make a steep requirement tractable, and it does so deliberately.

Reading a multiple in practice

Zero means the win is money. Ten means a genuine condition that a small balance regularly satisfies. Twenty means a demanding one that some accounts meet. Thirty and above means the offer is not designed to pay out from a free credit, and should be judged as free play rather than as a bonus.
