Casino Wagering Calculator: What a Bonus Costs to Clear

Enter a win and a wagering multiple and see the staking it takes to release it. The arithmetic is one multiplication; the reason large multiples fail is not.

Why doubling the multiple more than doubles the difficulty

The multiplication above is the easy half. The hard half is that the turnover has to be generated from the balance itself, and the balance shrinks as it is staked. A slot returning 96% gives back, on average, 96p of every pound staked and keeps 4p. Stake £12 and you have about £11.52 left with £12 of turnover recorded. Stake that and you have roughly £11.06 with £23.58 recorded. The balance decays geometrically while the turnover accumulates linearly.

At ten times, the £12 needs to survive about ten of those round trips, which happens often. At forty, forty round trips — and the average path does not reach the end. That is why 40x is not four times harder than 10x. It is a different category of condition.

Everything above uses the average return, which is the optimistic description. Real slot play is high variance: the balance jumps and drops rather than declining smoothly, and it reaches zero far more often than the average path suggests. Variance makes a requirement harder, never easier, because a balance at zero does not recover.

Why wagering matters more than the headline

Across the 8 no-deposit offers tracked here, the award ranges from twenty spins to a hundred — a factor of five. The requirement ranges from nothing to forty times, which in terms of what it costs to release a win is not a factor at all but a difference in kind. Three of those offers pay a win straight out. One asks for £480. Sorting by the advertised award produces close to the reverse of a ranking by what actually pays.

The full explanation of the mechanism, including what does to it, is in the wagering requirements guide. The offers themselves are ordered by this number on the front page.

Why this calculation is worth a page

Because the result is routinely startling and the operation is trivial. Almost nobody reads "40x" and pictures £480, and the gap between those two representations of the same condition is where most poor decisions in this category are made.

The ladder above shows the same win at every multiple in circulation, which is the comparison that actually informs a choice. Moving from ten times to twenty doubles a figure. Moving from twenty to forty doubles it again — and, because the balance generating the turnover is shrinking as it goes, more than doubles the difficulty a second time.

What the calculator refuses to do

Estimate a return. It would be easy to multiply a stake by a published return percentage and print a number, and it would be misleading, because that percentage describes hundreds of thousands of spins and a free-spins award is fifty. The honest output is the required turnover, which is fixed by the terms, and nothing about what the spins will produce.

It also does not weight, score or rank. There is one operation, it is visible, and the result can be checked on paper — which is the property that distinguishes a calculator from a recommendation.

Questions about wagering requirements

6 answered

What does 5x wagering mean?

That winnings must be staked five times over before withdrawal. On a £12 win that is £60 of turnover — the lightest requirement in normal circulation, and one a small balance clears more often than not.

What does 10x wagering mean?

Ten times the winnings, so £120 of staking on a £12 win. It is the lowest requirement in the current UK no-deposit market that is not zero, and it is genuinely reachable from a small free-spins balance.

What does 20x wagering mean?

£240 of staking on a £12 win. Demanding rather than impossible: the balance has to survive roughly twenty round trips through the house edge, which some accounts manage and most do not.

Why does 40x fail so much more often than 20x?

Because the balance shrinks as it is staked, so the difficulty compounds rather than adding. Twice the multiple means twice as many round trips through the same decay, and the failure state — a balance at zero — is absorbing.

Does the calculator account for the game I play?

No, and no calculator honestly can. It gives the required turnover, which is fixed by the terms. Whether a balance survives generating that turnover depends on the game’s return percentage and, over a small number of rounds, mostly on variance.

Is the requirement applied to the bonus or the winnings?

On UK no-deposit free-spin offers, almost always to the winnings. On deposit offers it is frequently applied to the deposit and the bonus together, which roughly doubles the staking compared with a bonus-only calculation.
